Need help on a pattern

Hi, I hope someone can help me out.
I am an amateur crocheter and downloaded a free pattern called "Diamond Crib Quilt" designed by Ellen Anderson. It was featured in Crochet Home Magazine, No. 60, Page 36, Copyright 1997.

Within the pattern I am to crochet 310 white motifs, 23 diamond patterns and 12 half diamond patters of solid and variegated colors. The pattern says to "sew motifs together with white", but I don't understand how I am supposed to "Sew" them together. Do I sew with the machine? I can't figure out how to piece them together for a whip stitch, sl st, or sc, so I am thinking about the sewing machine. But that doesn't make sense.

Can anyone here give me some advice?
