Do you know how to knit? Do you want to help poor children? Jeanne Plourde, 70, a retired state employee, is looking for volunteers to help knit sweaters for the program Knits for Kids. What is Knits for Kids? Knits for Kids was sponsored long ago by Oxfam, which was knitting for European kids. Guideposts took up the call in 1996, and people have been knitting for the program since then. Their goal this year is 500,000 total; last year they made 400,000. From New Hampshire, we sent 108 sweaters (last year). How much skill do I need to knit a sweater? You just have to know the basic knit and purl stitch. It's a simple T-shaped pattern, no buttonholes or zippers. Some people add stripes, designs, different color combinations so they all look different, and they're beautiful. People who don't knit can crochet.
